The noise shouldn’t be on the reasons the newly appointed Mufti does not worth the sit. It shouldn’t be on his past heresies. It is a done deed already and non of the antagonists can change the appointment.
Certainly, if the Emir of Ilorin had appointed a “sunni” Muslim as the Mufti, there would have been upraors from our Sufi brothers on why such person doesn’t worth a Mufti of the city and its environs. Not only that, the brothers of the “sunni” Muslim, but of different faction would have likewise stood up to challenge the Emir for appointing a mubtadee’ (a religious innovator/heretic) and not serious sunni as a Mufti over them.
Afterall, the Emir will appoint scholars that are closer to him; and not those who distanced themselves from him or has branded him a mushrik or mubtadee’. So why making noise over the position that lies in the hand of your branded mubtadee’ and mushrik?
As a Muslim who understands the teachings and lessons of Islam as portrayed by the Prophet, I think what is necessary of the scholars and callers of Ilorin is to send a congratulatory and well wishing message to the newly appointed Mufti; wishing him well, reminding him of his duties (amaanah) and praying for his success.
Thereafter, those who are well versed among the scholars and callers should jettison their personal egos, move more closer to the Mufti and help him subsequently in the discharge of his duties. The sit of Mufti is a throne that is bigger than the Mufti himself, those surrounding him will surely have some or the most effects on him.
If the sit has been just a ceremonial sit that doesn’t carry the weight of a substantive Mufti, let the true scholars and callers of the city be his aides and remind him of the reasons the city and its environs need a substantial and effective Iftaa castle that will look after the varying issues affecting the Muslims of the city and its environs. Consequently, the Grand Mufti may change his known outrageous speeches; so far he’s still alive. Afterall, alot of “sunni” scholars in the same Ilorin/Yoruba land have passed outrageous verdicts in the past. We rather pray for Allah’s infinite guidance instead of engaging in abuse with no significance.
